Voici le contexte et la paragraphe dans lequel se trouve l'expression :
"I'd never evaluated the race strategically and did'nt have any backstops in place. Backstops are a versatile tool that I employ in all facets of my life. I was lead navigator when I operated in Iracq with the Seal teams, and "backstops" is a navigation term."

: La notion de repère est bonne et correspond à l'exemple de la navigation à terre ou en mer mais elle ne suffit pas ici. Il y a aussi la notion de limite à ne pas dépasser.

J'aimerais bien borne ici, avec des variantes comme : bornes à ne pas dépasser, bornage d'un parcours/trajet etc. Repère n'est pas mal, mais une borne implique en plus une notion de limite, qui est cruciale pour l'énoncé.

C'est aussi un terme utilisé pour le tir (balles ou flèches) : il s'agit d'un dispositif en arrière de la cible et permettant d'arrêter les projectiles. Cela peut être une butte de tir ou bien un dispositif fabriqué. Je ne suis pas sûre qu'il existe un terme spécifique en français (panneau de sécurité, écran de protection ?).
Voilà, ça c'était pour le contexte. Pour ce qui est de la navigation, je ne connais pas. Après, pour ce cas précis, cela pourrait être utile de connaître les examples cités par l'auteur de mise en place de backstops dans sa vie. Cela nous permettrait de savoir à quel point le terme est utilisé de manière métaphorique, ou si c'est bien concret au contraire. En attendant, je dirais quelque chose comme ligne/balise de sécurité.
