Spanish term

Nervios Ciático Poplíteo Interno y Tibial Posterior

Spanish to English Medical Medical (general) Kinesiology / anatomy
"Inervación
Nervios Ciático Poplíteo Interno y Tibial
Posterior."

My understanding is that "Nervio Ciático Poplíteo Interno" and "Nervio Tibial
Posterior" refers to the same thing https://dtme.ranm.es/buscador.aspx?NIVEL_BUS=3&LEMA_BUS=défi...

So, either the source text meant to say "Nervio (IN THE SINGULAR) Ciático Poplíteo Interno o (not y) Tibial Posterior" , in which case the most obvious translation would be "Tibial nerve", or I'm missing something.

Thank you everyone for your answers and comments. They've been very helpful.
Anne Schulz May 7, 2021:
In that case, the correct information is definitely "tibial nerve", and both the s in Nervios and the y for o are probably errors – unless the author has a different understanding of anatomy. As far as I remember, the tibial nerve used to be named posterior tibial nerve since it runs with the posterior tibial artery and vein, but modern nomenclature calls it "tibial nerve".

What is said to be innervated by the nervios ciático poplíteo interno y tibial posterior in your text? If you look up the muscle(s), you may find out whether the author just made a mistake.

tibial nerve

The sciatic nerve arises in the lumbosacral region. It descends through the posterior aspect of the thigh. Before entering the popliteal fossa, the nerve terminates by splitting into two large terminal branches: the tibial nerve and common fibular (peroneal) nerve.

The posterior tibial nerve (L4-S3) is a branch of the sciatic nerve. After entering the lower leg between the two heads of the gastrocnemius, it runs deep to the soleus in the deep posterior compartment of the leg.

The term “tibial nerve” is more commonly used, but the use of the term “posterior tibial nerve” is still very substantial. According to international anatomical terminology, the correct term is “tibial nerve,” which is a branch of the sciatic nerve.

Note from asker:
Interesante.

agree liz askew : strange though as the source says "nervios":)

Curious, yes, but it makes sense; any nerve branch is but a continuation of yet another nerve. The curious thing here is that there is no splitting. Thanks!

Internal Popliteal Sciatic Nerve/Tibial nerve

The posterior tibial nerve describes the distal end of the tibial nerve as it passes around the medial malleolus in the tarsal tunnel. Anatomically, the structure is a continuation its parent tibial nerve in a specific region of the distal extremity and does not represent a branch of the tibial nerve or a distinct structure. Accordingly, some texts will refer to it as the tibial nerve. Moreover, there is no anterior tibial nerve at the level of the foot or ankle. However, many authors and texts refer to the structure as the posterior tibial nerve due to its clinical significance. The tibial nerve is both a motor and sensory nerve is the largest distal extension of the sciatic nerve and is a branch of the lumbosacral plexus carrying spinal roots L4, L5, S1, S2, and S3.

The Tibial Nerve (n. tibialis; internal popliteal nerve) the larger of the two terminal branches of the sciatic, arises from the anterior branches of the fourth and fifth lumbar and first, second, and third sacral nerves.

It descends along the back of the thigh and through the middle of the popliteal fossa, to the lower part of the Popliteus muscle, where it passes with the popliteal artery beneath the arch of the Soleus. It then runs along the back of the leg with the posterior tibial vessels to the interval between the medial malleolus and the heel, where it divides beneath the laciniate ligament into the medial and lateral plantar nerves. In the thigh it is overlapped by the hamstring muscles above, and then becomes more superficial, and lies lateral to, and some distance from, the popliteal vessels;opposite the knee-joint, it is in close relation with these vessels, and crosses to the medial side of the artery
