Italian term

S.C.D.O

Italian to English Medical Medical (general)
I'm trying to work out what S.C.D.O. means within the context of this sentence:

S.C.D.O. DIREZIONE SANITARIA DEI PRESIDI OSPEDALIERI

My attempt is: HOSPITAL TRUST HEALTHCARE DIRECTORATE DEPARTMENTAL UNIT

Any insight would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

JudyC Jul 26, 2021:
Direzione Sanitaria di Presidio
S.C.D.O. = Struttura Complessa a Direzione Ospedaliera S.C.D.O. (as already pointed out)
https://www.sanluigi.piemonte.it/web/it/struttura-sanitaria/...

Departments in teaching hospitals are either "a direzione ospedaliera" or "a direzione universitaria".
"[...] la modifica dell’atto aziendale per la trasformazione della Chirurgia vascolare da struttura a direzione universitaria a ospedaliera e dell’Otorinolaringoiatria da struttura a direzione ospedaliera a universitaria”.
"[...] 52 unità operative sanitarie, 49 strutture complesse e 3 unità operative dipartimentali (di cui 30 a direzione universitaria e 19 a direzione ospedaliera)"

Direzione Sanitaria seems to be about hospital administration/management/coordination.

Scroll down to Presentazione to see what they do:

I think how you translate it will also depend on how central it is to the text, eg whether they're describing the hospital structure itself or if it's just part of the header

Hospital Department

I believe this stands for 'Struttura Complessa a Direzione Ospedaliera', as Pennylyd has put below. If following the source really closely you could translate as 'Hospital-Managed Multidisciplinary/Multispeciality Department', but I think it becomes a bit unnecessarily wordy.

On it's own, I'd probably translate as Hospital Department, however for your specific example I'd probably omit 'Hospital':

Hospital Trust Healthcare Directorate Department

correction: on *its* own!
Peer comment(s):

neutral Joseph Tein : Agree with the meaning of SCDO, but I think we need something more than 'department' for 'struttura complessa' (and note 'on ITS own', not 'on it's own' ... no apostrophe here)

Oops - thanks for the correction, Joseph! Schoolgirl error! I also agree that in other situations 'struttura complessa' may need further specification, however in this context I think the department name itself provides more than enough meaning.

hospital-managed facility

S.C.D.O. probably stands for struttura complessa a direzione ospedaliera
Peer comment(s):

agree Joseph Tein : Yes, that's the expansion of SCDO. (See Acromed reference below.) Maybe "hospital-based" facility?

Arabella, please check out this useful resource for Italian medical initialisms and acronyms. It's the most comprehensive resource available.

This is in pdf format that you can download and keep in your computer, to consult whenever you need.

Ciao Arabella. Yes, Acromed is a very useful resource for us. Gilberto Lacchia created this many years ago, and I've been helping him the last few years with acronyms/initialisms that I come across in my own work. Unfortunately we haven't added anything since the pandemic hit ... but this is still by far the most comprehensive reference available anywhere.

Buon lavoro!
