English term

communities of wellness

English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters attivazione del sistema s
Dear colleagues, I’m not sure about the meaning of “communities of wellness” in the text below, taken from an essay about addiction recovery treatment.
I’ve found several different descriptions of particular instances of “community of wellness”, but I haven’t been able to find a more general definition... Is it a sort of local center with different kinds of health care providers or is it something more specific?
Thank you so much for your help!
**********************

(in this part of his essay, the author is arguing for a number of changes needed in addiction treatment and the following is one of these)

Revisioning of the treatment-community relationship and positioning of professionally facilitated and specialty treatment providers and structures, such as drug courts and transformed police departments, within broader health care and *** communities of wellness**

Dear colleagues, thank you so much for your help! I guess this is again a case of "cocreation" of knowledge, because I'll draw something on each of your contributions: the aspect of "prevention" pointed out by Phil, the "holistic" dimension underlined by AllegroTrans and also the useful links and reflections by Daryo, not to mention the references by Liz and Robert.
Although I'm not sure, I think these "communities of wellness" are programs or initiatives that aim at promoting wellness and health on various levels and preventing disease also at a psychological level, and can be aimed at different "communities", the youth, the elderly, those at risk of addiction...
I'm really sorry I have to choose only one answer...

oranisations and agencies promoting and providing holistic healthcare/wellbeing

Such jargon!
It seems that almost anything can be labelled a "community" nowadays

What is the definition of wellness?
Wellness is the act of practicing healthy habits on a daily basis to attain better physical and mental health outcomes, so that instead of just surviving, you're thriving. To understand the significance of wellness, it's important to understand how it's linked to health.

Is wellness the same as being healthy?
In understanding the difference between health and wellness, in short, health is a state of being, whereas wellness is the state of living a healthy lifestyle (3). Health refers to physical, mental, and social well-being; wellness aims to enhance well-being.

I think it's more than simply "preventive"
neutral Daryo : Very useful references but agencies etc are the "organisers of ...", not the "community" itself.// you have defined/explained who are the "organisers/founders of wellness communities", not these "communities" themselves.

thanks but I don't see how your comment makes sense; I didnl't even have "communities" in my suggestion
agree Yvonne Gallagher : yes, can be literally community groups, agencies OR organisations promoting healthy practices. Need locale to be more precise

preventive public health

The whole sentence is jargon ridden and hard to understand, but Liz's second reference is helpful:

wellness
an approach to healthcare that emphasizes preventing illness and prolonging life, as opposed to emphasizing treating diseases.

Public health is the science of protecting and improving the health of people and their communities. This work is achieved by promoting healthy lifestyles, researching disease and injury prevention, and detecting, preventing and responding to infectious diseases. Overall, public health is concerned with protecting the health of entire populations. These populations can be as small as a local neighborhood, or as big as an entire country or region of the world.

neutral Daryo : Yes, there is a connection / it's related to the idea of "communities of wellness", but "communities" should be **groups of people**, and not necessarily organised as part of "public heath".

agree Andrew Bramhall : Talking of 'pubic heaths', went for a walk on the one at Hampstead today. Wrong answer chosen here IMO.

organised groups of people centered on "wellness"

That would be the most general definition, from what I can find. It seems to a "trendy" term.

The "organiser" could one individual, some NGO / non-profit, some state institution ... anyone.

The point of the group is "wellness" which could be anything that makes members of the group "feel well" / "have a healthier lifestyle".

Here "communities of wellness" would be organised groups helping recovering addicts to switch to a healthy lifestyle.

You can find a lot of talking about "communities of wellness", but not any specific detailed description of any of them.

Thank you so much, Daryo, for your useful links! Actually, one of them has made me think that the emphasis may be on "programs", "initiatives" directed to local communities (that can be, for instance, the youth, the elderly.. the addicted.. ecc.) to improve their wellness in a broad sense and to prevent health problems...
Peer comment(s):

neutral philgoddard : You can't define 'wellness' as 'wellness'.
23 mins
True, but I was more looking at the "community" part.
neutral AllegroTrans : You need other word/s for "wellness" if you are going to provide an explanation /// maybe, but asker needs some sort of an explanation, not just a repeat of the word!

The way it's used "wellness" is very vague - just about anything that would make you "feel well" // How would you define "just about anything"?

I think the term you're looking for needs to denote groups of people, rather than local centres and health care providers. A community in this sense is a group of/for people who need something else in their lives, who do stuff together, give each other moral support, etc.
I did a bit of googling and found the page linked below, which explicitly refers to "communities of wellness" in L.A., and describes what they are and what they offer.
