英和の辞書によると、on an expense accountとは経費会社負担で、という意味があります。確か食料品店のおかみさんをしていたと思うのですが、お店の食料をお金を払わずに、棚とか陳列されている品物から好きな物を取って食べていたような記憶があります(おぼろげですが)。つまり、帳簿には記帳せずに、お店の品物に手を付けていた、ということだと思います。帳簿に記帳すれば、売上になるので、申告の対象となるはずです。結局税金を払うのが嫌だったので、記帳せずにお店から勝手に商売品を食べていた、ということだと推測します。
