Could you paraphrase this for me?
"while the poplar trees are still standing"?
but these are not real poplar trees, this is a coppicing plantation where a number of small stems grows on a stump and they are cut off every 2, 3, 4 years.

From a forestry glossary: http://www.dnr.state.md.us/forests/gloss.html#sstand - a group of forest trees of sufficiently uniform species composition, age, and condition to be considered a homogeneous unit for management purposes. I believe it would be when they reach the adequate homogenous level for forest management.

: I doubt those trees know the last thing about forest management... More likely their stands, collectively, are treated as a homogenous unit by those working in forestry management.

When the group trees.. the chemical composition can be tested. I did not imply the trees knew anything about forest management.
