I am translating the abstract of a psychiatry paper and the subject is depression during pregnancy. I have researched and it seems that both the above terms are used. Does anyone know if they are really equivalent? (EN-UK please)

I think they are indeed used interchangeably.
While many citations indicate it to be more prevalent in the final months of expectancy, I think the term applies to depression occuring at any point in the pregnancy.

: All obstetrics reference includes prenatal diagnostics, care, treatment, etc. for each of the three trimester of the pregnancy. In other words, it refers to the whole period of pregnancy, not only for the time immediately prior to birth.

there doesn't seem to be much semantic difference between both terms but I would still say that "prenatal" is closer to the actual birth than during the entire pregnancy .... let's see what colleagues have to say on this ....

Without being a psychologist, I'm inclined to think that generally women are quite happy during pregnancy and hormonal activity contributes to that unless the mother to be is generally of a depressive nature to start with and in this case the fact that she is pregnant does not enter into the question. I cannot find any reference to prenatal depression on the Internet leading me to believe it is either rare or simply something that affects those who tend towards depression in the first place or whose circumstances are such that depression may set it - e.g. a single mum to be.

I am inclined to think it would affect women who are generally depressive in the first place or who have shown signs of depression prior to becoming pregnant.
I'm not one for believing mag articles on the subject since they're written to sell the mag rather than based on medical research and case histories. I'm happy to ask a friend who is gynie should you wish.

Can you go through these UK links on the subject and try to decide which part of pregnancy they're referring to as it is true that hormonal activity generally keeps mum to be in high spirits unless she is in deplorable social welfare circumstances or on her own or just too young/kicked out of home or all sorts of things. At which point might depression set in? Is she already tending to depression before pregnancy? Has her bloke chucked her because she's suddenly swelling? Being blunt here but these are all contributing factors. Try the links for insight into research going on:

Studies show depression is highest during the 8th month of pregnancy - which is fairly close to the birth but not surprising. Who wouldn't be fed up by that stage? But this is a Harvard study. Nothing seems to exist as far as research in the UK but they have more researchers and means across the pond anyway.

Logically prenatal is just prior to the birth as post partum is just after the birth so this would NOT be the same as depression during pregnancy. I'd take a look at all the links and have a good think after a good night's sleep.

: Since the original question only asked about the interchangeability of 2 terms, I really don't think one should start presuming that the term was diametrically wrong in the first place! I'm sure author knew what they meant, prenatal dep's common enough
