Portuguese is not a native language to Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Cabo Verde, etc. It's their national language. Their nationals are generally native speakers of Portuguese, but Portuguese is Portugal's native language, only! There is a big difference between a national language and a native language. A language is native only to the country where it (the language, not the speakers) was "born".

Obrigado, Luiza! Qual será a língua "nativa", português ou tupi-guarani? Espanhol ou quetchua, na Bolívia? Mas não há dúvidas quanto à língua nacional.

: I still think that 'Native' is the correct translation to Ivaneide's question. Although I was born in Wales (Pais de Gales), my 'native' language is English because that is the widely spoken language in the region - 'technically' incorrect, but true.

Your "native language" in English because that's the first language you learned to speak. But it doesn't make English a native language to Wales, although it may be its national language, instead of Welsh.

Obrigado, Denise, ótimo link! Confundiram "native speaker" com "native language". O inglês só é "native language" na Inglaterra, mas é a língua nacional na Austrália e em alguns países africanos. Assim como o espanhol é a língua nacional no México.

: What's the native language in Chile: Spanish or Araucanian? // The fact that an American is a native speaker of English doesn't make English the native language of the USA. It's the US national language, but it's native only to England.
