Agora, alguma luz para o sentido de ""gama"" neste contexto.

Na verdade, não acho que falte sentido ao texto. Acho que o que ele quer dizer é que foram introduzidos gateways e distâncias, antes utilizados/considerados somente em redes computacionais, adaptados a serviços móveis (cujos requerimentos são diferentes das redes de computadores). Mesmo assim, pode ser que haja alguma sugestão melhor.
