Source text - English The New Acropolis Museum, a Minimalist Showcase for Ancient Greek Art
Greece displays remnants of its past—and bids to reclaim those it lost—all in the shadow of architecture’s most celebrated landmark.
As one of the most esteemed monuments of Western civilization, the Parthenon has both inspired and cast its shadow over many an architect. Visiting the Athenian Acropolis for 12 days straight in 1911, Le Corbusier was by turns exhilarated and oppressed by the glory of its buildings. He pronounced himself “stupefied by this gigantic apparition” which provoked “heartrending doubt” in his own abilities. “It crushes you until you’re ground to dust,” he lamented.
Karl Friedrich Schinkel was less intimidated. After Bavarian Prince Otto became king of Greece in 1834, the Prussian architect boldly drew up a royal palace that would have partly surrounded the Parthenon’s ruins, but it was never built. More recently, Walter Gropius attempted a modernist reimagining of the temple to Athena when he designed a white marble U.S. Embassy in the Greek capital in 1956.
There are a number of 20th century high-rises in Athens—Vincent Scully denounced the 14-story Hilton designed by a trio of Greek architects as “vandalism” when it opened in 1963—but the primacy of the Acropolis on the skyline has been largely preserved. Still, building anywhere in its proximity can be a vexed task.
With his long-awaited New Acropolis Museum, which opened in June at the base of the once-sacred plateau, Bernard Tschumi becomes the latest to wrestle with the Parthenon’s daunting precedent. The former dean of Columbia University’s architecture school has had mixed success in creating a showcase worthy of the sculptures of the Acropolis and what remains in Greece of the Parthenon frieze, after half was removed with saws and crowbars at the behest of Britain’s Lord Elgin two centuries ago.
Swiss-born Tschumi had no interest in overtly miming the Parthenon’s form. Instead, the museum pays subtle homage to the Doric landmark and landscape through a monolithic minimalism. From the outside, the building’s façade of black fritted glass inserts a massive, inky rectangular box into the cityscape, which provoked intense controversy among many Athenians for being overscaled. This was, for sure, a supersized commission with a double-pronged task—diplomatic as well as archaeological. It aims not only to preserve the remnants of Acropolis sculpture that can no longer be left out in the open air due to pollution, but also to convince the British government to return the Athenian artworks to their place of origin.
Demands for Britain to give back the sculptures emerged almost as soon as the so-called Elgin Marbles were first removed in the early 1800s. The dispute over what Greece prefers to call the Parthenon sculptures has been waged by scores of politicians and in poetry and prose by Thomas Hardy, Lord Byron, Constantine Cavafy, and John Keats. But the calls for their return gained renewed fervor in the 1970s after the sculptures became increasingly identified with Greek democracy after the fall of military rule in Athens.
When fiery actress Melina Mercouri gave up her film career to become culture minister in 1981, she brought renewed attention to the issue. High on her agenda was dispelling Britain’s doubt that the Greeks could be trusted as custodians of their own heritage by creating a purpose-built museum to spotlight and safeguard the sculptures—something to outshine the British Museum’s imposing Neo-Classical Parthenon gallery, designed by American architect John Russell Pope and completed in 1938.
Tschumi’s design, realized with Greek architect Michael Photiadis, won the fourth in a succession of competitions held to come up with a concept for the new museum. Arguments over excavations repeatedly delayed construction of the museum, originally due to open in time for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. “Polemic is a Greek word,” noted Tschumi as he walked around the finished building, adding that 104 lawsuits sought to halt the $180 million project.
At 46,000 square feet and containing some 4,000 artifacts, the museum is nearly 10 times as big as the cramped, 19th century Acropolis Museum just behind the Parthenon. From the outside, Tschumi’s tri-level composition is clearly visible, but the façade mutates from side to side, with individual segments consisting variously of precast concrete panels, corrugated steel, and long expanses of dark glass. By placing the top segment off-kilter from the rest, Tschumi attempted to give a sense of movement to the behemoth that he has wedged in among low-rise modern apartment blocks and 19th century Neo-Classical buildings.
The structure hovers over the now nearly completed excavations, held aloft by 43 concrete columns placed in consultation with archaeologists as well as engineers. Glass pavers give views of the archaeological finds below, revealing multiple layers of Athenian history, including homes, bathhouses, and workshops dating from periods after the creation of the Parthenon in the fifth century B.C.
The interior of the building is far better than its bulky exterior, and circulation through it is intended to recall the experience of mounting the Acropolis itself. After entering beneath a grand cantilevered concrete overhang, visitors amble up a glass ramp toward the displayed fragments of an ancient temple, ransacked by the Persians in 480 B.C. on what became the site of the Parthenon.
Turning to the right, visitors enter a vast, triangular gallery filled with an astounding collection of archaic sculpture arranged as if in an agora. Natural light has been deployed here to maximum effect, pouring through south-facing windows into the white marble-floored room with its forest of sandblasted concrete pillars. Because sunlight from the east and west is so intense, at these ends of the building Tschumi has created louvered walls of corrugated stainless steel panels.
From here there is another ascent, to the uppermost gallery, a huge glass rectangle containing the remains of the Parthenon frieze, metope reliefs, and pediment sculptures. This dazzling gallery has been shifted from the lower portion of the museum to bring it in parallel alignment with the Parthenon outside. The room has roughly the same footprint as the Athenian temple, which can be seen 300 yards away by visitors as they review the Parthenon frieze and the metopes.

Source text - English Conflict had existed between Spain and England since the 1570s. England wanted a share of the wealth that Spain had been taking from the lands it had claimed in the Americas.
Elizabeth I, Queen of England, encouraged her staunch admiral of the navy, Sir Francis Drake, to raid Spanish ships and towns. Though these raids were on a small scale, Drake achieved dramatic success, adding gold and silver to England's treasury and diminishing Spain's omnipotence.
Religious differences also caused conflict between the two countries. Whereas Spain was Roman Catholic, most of England had become Protestant. King Philip II of Spain wanted to claim the throne and make England a Catholic country again. To satisfy his ambition and also to retaliate against England's theft of his gold and silver, King Philip began to build his fleet of warships, the Armada, in January 1586.
Philip intended his fleet to be indestructible. In addition to building new warships, he marshaled one hundred and thirty sailing vessels of all types and recruited more than nineteen thousand robust soldiers and eight thousand sailors. Although some of his ships lacked guns and others lacked ammunition, Philip was convinced that his Armada could withstand any battle with England.
The martial Armada set sail from Lisbon, Portugal, on May 9, 1588, but bad weather forced it back to port. The voyage resumed on July 22 after the weather became more stable.
The Spanish fleet met the smaller, faster, and more maneuverable English ships in battle off the coast of Plymouth, England, first on July 31 and again on August 2. The two battles left Spain vulnerable, having lost several ships and with its ammunition depleted. On August 7, while the Armada lay at anchor on the French side of the Strait of Dover, England sent eight burning ships into the midst of the Spanish fleet to set it on fire. Blocked on one side, the Spanish ships could only drift away, their crews in panic and disorder. Before the Armada could regroup, the English attacked again on August 8.
Although the Spaniards made a valiant effort to fight back, the fleet suffered extensive damage. During the eight hours of battle, the Armada drifted perilously close to the rocky coastline. At the moment when it seemed that the Spanish ships would be driven onto the English shore, the wind shifted, and the Armada drifted out into the North Sea. The Spaniards recognized the superiority of the English fleet and returned home, defeated.

New College in Oxford, UK, is famous
for a story told by Gregory Bateson.
Allegedly a college restoration committee recently discovered that oak
trees were planted in the forest nearby
350 years ahead of their time, to be
able to replace the beams in the main
hall’s ceiling when they started to suffer from dry rot. Bateson remarked: ‘That’s the way to run a culture.’ It is a
truly remarkable story, but the New
College’s website puts it this way:
‘The affair of the oak trees.
This is another hoary tale, which has
done the rounds in various guises.
The story is that when the college fellows decided to restore the hall roof in
1862, they were wondering where to
get the oak for the beams to support
it. The college woodsman pointed out
that their predecessors had planted
acorns in their Buckinghamshire
woods in about 1380, so that mature
trees would be available when needed
for the repair of the buildings.’
This story is an embroidery on the
theme of continuity and foresight
which, when examined in detail, is
nonsense. For one thing, the roof of
the hall had already been rebuilt once,
by a local builder named James Pears
in 1786. He used pitch pine timbers
and Westmoreland slate. The hall itself had a plaster ceiling in Pears’
design. Hereford B. George in his
book ‘New College, 1856-1906’ said
that it had just enough mouldings to
give it the appearance of an inverted
tea tray. If the college woodsman had
been so free with advice in 1862, why
did his predecessor hold his tongue in
1786? More pertinently, the Buckinghamshire woods where the mature
oaks were felled did not come into the
hands of the college until 1441. The
truth is that the oaks came from the
college woods in Great Horwood,
Akeley and Whaddon Chase, where
they had indeed been maturing for
several hundred years. Yet, if you
think back to a society where hardwood
was the principal construction
material, it is obvious that some trees
in every wood had to be left to grow
on, while the others yielded a crop of
coppiced poles every 15 years or so.
1.14. Virtual living
Apart from the energy and material
needed to build and use computers,
which is a lot really, you won’t need
anything to create a luxurious home
with a pool somewhere on the Internet. Alpha World is a 3D virtual environment that was started as soon as
web browsers appeared. It evolved
from ‘computer ancient’ concepts
called ‘Multi User Dungeons’, or
‘MUDs’, that were (and still are) entirely text oriented net communities.
In Alpha World, which has several
million inhabitants, everybody can
build his or her dream home on a spot
that is defined by its X and Y values
on the Alpha World map. Because it is
easier to remember simple numbers,
‘from above’ the city looks like a cross.
There is still a lot of space available,
particularly if you don’t mind remembering difficult coordinates.
1.15. Sound building
The little lamb is part of nature as is
the ancient oak. So are the gnat that
brings malaria, poison ivy, meteorites
and earthquakes. Gradually man is
learning to deal with the latter to some
extent. Systems are being developed to
prevent buildings from tumbling
down. These bear a remarkable resemblance to noise control. An earthquake is indeed a kind of sound of very low
frequency and high amplitude, guided
by the earth’s crust. Therefore preventing earthquake damage entails insulation, damping and vibration control.
In high-rise buildings damping may
also serve to compensate for the effects
of wind force.
An earthquake, beside vertical vibration, mainly consists of horizontal rotation and translation of the earth’s
crust. Insulation ideally implies that
these movements are not transferred to
the building. It is like a magician who
quickly draws away the tablecloth from
under the arrangement of cutlery,
plates and glasses. Everything stays in
place because of the inertia of the objects and the smoothness of the tablecloth. Buildings can rest on smooth
supports on top of the foundations.
When the earth moves the foundations
will too, but the building remains in
place. A new insulation system has
been under investigation but has not
been applied yet. It starts from the assumption that at a considerable height above ground level it is more difficult
for ground shaken by an earthquake to
move the mass of a building. The idea,
developed by Prof Teiichi Takahashi, is
that the building is hung by its roof
structure from a very high columnshaped foundation on which it can
slide back and forth.
The simplest principle of damping is to
passively absorb a major part of the
energy that the ‘quake’ tries to transfer
to the building. This can be achieved
with elastic materials, like rubber, or
with metal that will undergo plastic deformation. Steel spring absorbers, for instance, are transformed during the
movement and have to be replaced
afterwards. Lead can also be used. Viscous fluids can dampen movement if they have to be pressed through a narrow opening. Generally the energy of movement is transformed into deformation energy, and heat. Electricity for use after an earthquake would be nice
but is obviously too far away from the
concept of disaster prevention to be
taken into account.
If the shock energy is forced to move
more mass than just the building this
has a damping effect too, provided the
extra mass is attached to the building
as a mass spring system in the sense
that it can move relative to the building. The same principle is frequently applied to reduce vibration, even in
electric shavers.
All the aforementioned compensation
and absorption systems have proved
their right to exist but still they are not
smart, for their function is not proportional to the earthquake at hand. They are ‘passive’. A more refined principle
allows adjustment of the mass to tune
it to circumstances but the most
sophisticated ‘active’ damping systems
work on the basis of direct feedback,
which means that they are ‘aware’ of
what they are doing. They react to
their own effect by countermovement
control of the mass and/or by adjusting the amount of mass involved in the movement, both by means of motors.
The 200 metre high building ORC 200
in Osaka, finished in 1993, features two
hybrid combinations of passive and
active mass dampers on the 51st floor.
Rotation is controlled actively and
translation passively. They are two
concrete blocks of 100 tonnes each on
top of layers of rubber. Two motors
can adjust the system characteristics by

New College en Oxford, Reino Unido, es famosa gracias a una historia contada por Gregory Bateson.
Supuestamente un comité de la restauración de la universidad descubrió hace poco tiempo que se plantaron robles en el bosque hace alrededor de 350 años atrás, para poder reemplazar las vigas en el
techo principal del salón cuando comenzaran a sufrir de resequedad.

En los edificios de gran altura, la amortiguación puede servir también para compensar los efectos de la fuerza del viento.
Un terremoto, además de ser una vibración vertical, consiste principalmente en la rotación horizontal, consiste en una rotación horizontal y el traslado de la corteza terrestre. Si se obliga a la energía de choque a mover más masa que sólo el edificio, ésta tiene un efecto de amortiguación también, siempre que la masa adicional esté unida al edificio como un sistema de masa y resorte en el sentido que puede moverse junto al edificio.
El mismo principio es aplicado con frecuencia para reducir la vibración, incluso en máquinas de afeitar eléctricas.
Toda la compensación mencionada y sistemas de absorción, han probado su derecho a existir, pero todavía no son inteligentes, pues su uso no es proporcional al terremoto del que hablamos. Estas
