Source text - English It was more than 10 years ago that Alternative Culture Publishing Co, decided to publish the Korean edition of Our Bodies, Ourselves, and it took 4 years for translation and adaptation.
Short of human and monetary resources, the company had delayed the publication for years.
One day, several women anxious to translate the book proposed its publication to the company.
They were the activists at Korea Sexual Violence Relief Center, who had met Our Bodies, Ourselves somewhere else and had deep impression.
Soon they began to introduce the book, and persuade other feminists to participate in its translation.
As a result, in winter 1991, the team for Korean edition of Our Bodies, Ourselves, consisting of about 30 volunteers, was organized.
Each one took charge of one chapter, and in case the chapter was quite long, two co-worked for one chapter.
It took almost a year to finish the translation.
In January 2003, the team for editing and adaptation was formed, comprised of some members of the translation team, several women editors, and two Women’s Studies graduate students.
They had meetings once or twice a month for one and half years, reviewing and correcting the draft.
They also refined the sentences and collected resources in Korean language.
For 6 months, from November 2004, the editor at the company and feminist translators elaborated the draft again, and completed the Resources.
Doing this, we came to think about what was a “politically correct” translation.
We paid attention not to use male- centered, ethnocentric language(s) or the terms which take non-disabled, heterosexual married couple as the norm when we chose rather unfamiliar words than commonly used ones based on the gender stereotypes or male-centered sexuality.
After selecting Korean terms, we cut out what was considered not to be useful for Korea readers because of quite different context from that of the U.S. For example, some sections focused on racism and the colored were cut out.
However, some parts about American social systems, laws, and statistics survived, if they seemed to serve as references or models.
We tried to put South Korean statistics instead of those of the U.S. or along with them, with their sources noted .
We inserted“in the U.S.”in many places, where readers could be mixed up.
And when adapting and including Korean statistics, we clarified it by adding“in Korea.”
But some chapters treating the situations far from South Korean women’s experiences, were translated in full, not being cut out.
For example, what were in Chapter 10 on homosexuality and chapter 17 on abortion were not familiar to Korean readers, but we thought American laws, systems, and history of movements would be helpful to South Korean women.
We noted it on the first pages of the chapters.
Other chapters such as 2, 7, and 8 contain relatively much information from Korean sources.
Since women’s movements against sexual violence and domestic violence and ecological movements by women in South Korea had gained strength, and obtained excellent results, we had a lot to add about our experiences.
Much of Chapters 25 and 27 were deleted.
The medical system of the U.S. which are treated in Chapter 25 are totally different from that of Korea.
In that respect, we judged much of the chapter not to be helpful to Korean readers.
In chapter 27, we cut out various movements in the U.S. and added Korean movements.
In Chapter 13 and 18, some parts of the 8th edition of Our Bodies, Ourselves (2005) were included, which treated new contraceptives and biotechnology.
We decided to omit references and some footnotes about sources in English in order to make the book accessible to general readers.
Instead, at the end of every chapter, we listed Korean books, films, websites, and contact numbers.
We also introduced English websites about women’s health at the end of chapter 27.
They were selected from the updated list in the 8th edition of Our Bodies, Ourselves.

Translation - Portuguese Foi há mais de 10 anos que a Alternative Culture Publishing Co decidiu publicar a versão coreana de Our Bodies, Ourselves, e demorou por volta de 4 anos até que a tradução e a adaptação ficassem prontas.
Devido à da falta de recursos humanos e monetários, a companhia atrasou a publicação por anos. Até que um dia, diversas mulheres ansiosas para traduzir o livro propuseram a publicação para a companhia. Ativistas do Korea Sexual Violence Relief Center (KSVRC), elas encontraram o Our Bodies, Ourselves por acaso, e se impressionaram. Logo começaram a divulgar o livro, e convencer outras feministas a participar da sua tradução. Como resultado, no inverno de 1991 a equipe da edição coreana do Our Bodies, Ourselves, com aproximadamente 30 voluntárias, foi formada. Cada uma se responsabilizou por um capítulo e, no caso de capítulos mais longos, duas pessoas trabalharam juntas em um mesmo capítulo.
Levou quase um ano para terminar a tradução. Em janeiro de 2003, foi formada a equipe de edição e adaptação, composta por algumas pessoas da equipe de tradução, várias mulheres editoras e duas estudantes de graduação em Women´s Studies. Ao longo de um ano e meio, elas fizeram reuniões uma ou duas vezes por mês, revisando e corrigindo a primeira versão. Também aperfeiçoaram o texto e coletaram recomendações em língua coreana. Durante 6 meses, a partir de novembro de 2004, o editor da companhia e as tradutoras feministas reelaboraram a primeira versão e completaram as Recomendações. Ao mesmo tempo, nós começamos a pensar sobre o que seria uma tradução “politicamente correta”.
Tomamos o cuidado em não usar uma linguagem etnocêntrica, centrada ao masculino ou termos que considerassem casais heterossexuais e não dissidentes como norma quando traduzimos para o coreano. Escolhemos palavras de pouca familiaridade em vez das mais comuns baseadas em estereótipos de gêneros ou centradas na sexualidade masculina.
Depois de selecionar os termos em coreano, descartamos o que seria considerado inútil para as leitoras coreanas devido ao nosso contexto, bem diferente dos EUA. Por exemplo, algumas seções focadas em racismo e pessoas racializadas foram retiradas. No entanto, algumas partes sobre o sistema social estadunidense, leis e estatísticas foram conservadas para serem vistas como referências ou modelos. Nós tentamos colocar estatísticas sul-coreanas em vez de estadunidenses, ou colocamos ambas, com as devidas fontes.
Nós inserimos “nos Estados Unidos” em diversos momentos em que as leitoras poderiam se confundir. E, quando adaptando e incluindo as estatísticas coreanas, esclarecemos, especificando “na Coreia”. Alguns capítulos que tratam de situações distantes das experiências das mulheres sul-coreanas foram completamente traduzidos e não foram descartados.
Por exemplo, o que estava no Capítulo 10 sobre homossexualidade e no Capítulo 17 sobre aborto não era familiar para leitoras coreanas, mas pensamos que as leis, sistemas e história dos movimentos estadunidenses seriam de ajuda para as mulheres sul-coreanas. Isso foi ressaltado nas primeiras páginas dos capítulos.
Outros capítulos, como o 2, 7 e 8, contêm relativamente bastante informação de fontes da Coreia. Devido ao fato de que os movimentos de mulheres contra a violência sexual e contra a violência doméstica e os movimentos ambientalistas realizados também por mulheres na Coreia do Sul havia ganhado força e obtido excelentes resultados, tivemos muito o que acrescentar sobre as nossas experiências.
Grande parte dos capítulos 25 e 27 foi apagada. O sistema de saúde dos EUA que foi abordado no capítulo 25 é totalmente diferente do sistema sul-coreano. Por isso, julgamos que muita coisa daquele capítulo não seria de ajuda para nossas leitoras.
No capítulo 27, cortamos diversos movimentos estadunidenses e adicionamos movimentos coreanos.
Nos capítulos 13 e 18, algumas partes da oitava edição de Our Bodies, Ourselves (2005) sobre contraceptivos e biotecnologia foram incluídas.
A fim de tornar o livro acessível para a leitora comum, decidimos omitir referências e algumas notas de rodapé de referências em inglês. Em seu lugar, listamos livros, filmes, sites e números de contato, todos coreanos, ao final de cada capítulo. Também apresentamos, no final do capítulo 27, sites em inglês sobre a saúde das mulheres. Eles foram selecionados da lista atualizada da oitava edição de Our Bodies, Ourselves.
