Source text - English Truth to be told, I am not a big fan of the original fairy tale. The notion of a king confining his daughters and offering their hands in marriage to any stranger capable of solving a riddle deeply unsettled me. It seems inconceivable that a father would place his daughters in such a predicament, effectively treating them as commodities to be won. However this version of the story significantly improved my perception of the tale. The feminist twist was a pleasant surprise and the illustrations were absolutely stunning.
I am a true believer of the power of books, and I believe a well-crafted children's book has the potential to give valuable lessons to anybody, even adults. In this particular story, the portrayal of the king can be interpreted as a representation of parents who, in their pursuit of safeguarding their children, inadvertently hinders their ability to lead independent lives. While acknowledging the fact that, the world is indeed a risky place for children, especially for girls, the narrative scrutinizes the effectiveness of confining them at home for their safety. Instead, the story advocates for the importance of empowering girls with the knowledge of self-help, fostering the idea that they need not rely on external rescue when they possess the capability to be self-reliant.
Translation - Bengali সত্যি বলতে, আমি মৌলিক রূপকথাটির খুব বড় ভক্ত নই। একজন রাজা, তার মেয়েদের বন্দি করে রেখেছে, এবং তাদেরকে এমন একজন অজানা লোকের সাথে বিয়ে দিয়ে দিচ্ছে যার একমাত্র যোগ্যতা বলতে সে একটি ধাঁধার উত্তর বলতে পেরেছে, এটা আমাকে খুবই অস্বস্তি দিতো। একজন বাবা তার মেয়েদের সাথে কিভাবে এমনটা করতে পারে এটাই আমার বোধগম্য হতো না। সে যাই হোক, নতুনভাবে লেখা এই গল্পটিতে আমার সে অস্বস্তির কিছুটা হলেও উপশম হয়েছে। লেখিকা গল্পে যে নারীবাদী আঙ্গিকটি এনেছেন তা এক কথায় অতুলনীয়, এবং বইটির ভিতরের চিত্রগুলিও অনেক আকর্ষণীয় ছিলো।
আমি বিশ্বাস করি যে একটি ভালো বই মানুষকে বদলে দেবার ক্ষমতা রাখে। একজন মানুষ, সে যে বয়সের-ই হোক না কেন, একটি গল্প যদি যথাযথ ভাবে লেখা হয়ে থাকে, সেখান থেকে সে কোন না কোন শিক্ষা অবশ্যই নিবে। যেমন ধরি এই বইটি, এই বইয়ের রাজা চরিত্রটিকে আমরা আমাদের বাবা-মা-এর সাথে তুলনা করতে পারি। এমন অনেক বাবা-মা আছেন, যারা তাদের সন্তানকে নিরাপদে রাখতে তাদের পৃথিবীর থেকে আলাদা করে রাখেন, ফলশ্রুতিতে তারা একজন স্বাধীন ব্যক্তি হিসেবে গড়ে উঠতে ব্যর্থ হয়। বড় হয়েও তারা তাদের বাবা-মার উপর অনেকটাই নির্ভরশীল হয়ে থাকে। এটা সত্যি যে পৃথিবী বাচ্চাদের জন্যে, বিশেষ করে মেয়ে শিশুদের জন্যে নিরাপদ নয়, এটাকে স্বীকার করেই লেখিকা শিশুদের ঘরবন্দি করে রাখার কার্যকারিতা নিয়ে প্রশ্ন তুলেছেন। তার পরিবর্তে আমাদের বাচ্চাদেরকে স্বাবলম্বী করে গড়ে তুলতে অনুপ্রেরনা দিয়েছে, যাতে আমাদের মেয়েকে নিজেকে রক্ষা করতে কোন রাজপুত্রের জন্যে অপেক্ষা করতে না হয়।
