Source text - Hungarian Lifelong Learning and school
The study examines the relationship between Lifelong Learning and school. First, it analyzes the function and social role of school, then it presents the expectations in connection with founding lifelong learning: the opportunities of forming key competences and the motivation to learn. Finally, it presents the shortcomings of the practices applied in today’s schools and presents a short summary of two selected school development proposals from the international specialty literature.
The social function and role of school
“School is good if one can learn really necessary things there. This is something we don’t own yet, which we hadn’t done well originally, and we hadn’t known previously” affirms Hartmut von Hentig when his nephew Tobias goes to first grade and asks why children have to go to school (Hentig 2006, 28). Traditionally, the role of school is built on the dialectics existing between individual development and the preparation for social life. As Humboldt put it, the goal of every educational activity is “the harmonious versatile development of individuals which leads to the creation of an independent and self-commanding personality who enriches humanity through his/her ideal and uniqueness”. Ipfling differentiates between three important roles of school: personality development, the conveying of social norms, through which the social integration of the individual is accomplished; in short: school serves the socialization of individuals and their selection process (Ipfling 1998). The latter means the regulation of social position occupancy, which also happens with the help of the education system. Of necessity, this last function may contradict the first two: the development of individuals' personality may contradict the integration process into social life.
Today's school has to prepare individuals for living in a society which doesn't exist yet. Resulting from the accelerating technical, social and economic progress, the hitherto known socio-cultural orientations change or lose some of their importance, i.e. the changed role of church. There are versatile decision and choice possibilities in the way individuals lead their lives. Hereby, the world around us becomes more and more complex. The individual is given the task to decide self-sufficiently and in a responsible way about the offering possibilities. For the above reasons, people in the 21st century need such knowledge, general education, professional expertise, with the help of which they can actively participate, to their own and society’s benefit, in the building of this changing world, may it be work or social life itself. „In this world, when there is something new discovered or invented almost daily, when computers answer all existing questions, when big corporations and international companies restrain politics, there is need first of all, for brave and trustworthy, curious and friendly, attentive and reflective people. For people who can see through things, and are self-aware„ (Hentig 2006, 77).
Translation - English Az élethosszig tartó tanulás és az iskola
A tanulmány az élethosszig tartó tanulás és az iskola kapcsolatát vizsgálja. Először az iskola funkcióját és társadalmi szerepét taglalja, majd az élethosszig tartó tanulás megalapozásával kapcsolatos elvárásokat mutatja be: a kulcskompetenciák és a tanulási motiváció kialakításának lehetőségeit. Végezetül az iskolai oktatás jelenlegi gyakorlatának hiányosságairól és a nemzetközi szakirodalom két kiválasztott iskolafejlesztési javaslatáról ad rövid összefoglalást.
Az iskola társadalmi funkciója és szerepe
„Az iskola akkor jó, ha azt lehet megtanulni benne, amire valóban szükségünk van. Ez pedig az, ami még nincs a birtokunkban, amit nem csináltunk eleve jól, amit korábban nem tudtunk”, írja Hartmut von Hentig első osztályba induló unokaöccsének, Tobiasnak arra a kérdésre, miért is kell a gyerekeknek iskolába járniuk. (Hentig 2006, 28). Az iskola feladata hagyományosan az individuális fejlesztés és a társadalmi életre való felkészítés dialektikájára épül. Ahogy Humboldt fogalmazta, mindennemű oktatási-nevelési tevékenység célja „az egyéniség mindenoldalú harmónikus fejlesztése, amely egy önálló és önrendelkező személyiség kialakulásához vezet, aki a maga eszményiségével és egyedülállóságával az emberiséget gazdagítja”. Ipfling az iskolának három fő feladatát különbözteti meg: a személyiségfejlesztést, a társadalmi normák átadását és általuk az egyén társadalomba való beilleszkedését, röviden: az egyén szocializációját szolgálja valamint a szelektálást (Ipfling 1998). Utóbbi az iskolarendszer segítségével történő társadalmi pozíciókhoz való hozzájutás szabályozását jelenti. Ez a funkció természetszerűleg ellentmondásba keveredhet az előző kettővel. Az egyén személyiségének fejlesztése és annak a társadalomba való beilleszteni akarása ugyancsak ellentétes irányba ható folyamatok (lehetnek).
A mai iskolának egy olyan társadalomban való élésre kell felkészítenie a tanulókat, ami ma még nem létezik. A folyamatosan gyorsuló technikai, társadalmi és gazdasági fejlődés következtében az eddigi szociokulturális orientációk elvesztik ill. megváltoztatják jelentőségüket (pl. az egyház szerepe). Sokoldalú döntési és választási lehetőségek alakulnak ki az életvezetés terén. A körülöttünk lévő világ ezzel egyre komplexebbé válik. Az egyénre hárul a feladat, hogy a felkínálkozó lehetőségek között önállóan és felelősségteljesen döntsön. Ezért a 21. század emberének olyan tudásra, műveltségre, szakmai ismeretekre van szüksége, amelyek birtokában aktívan – a maga és a társadalom javára – részt vehet e változó világ építésében, a munkában csakúgy, mint a társadalmi életben. „Ebben a mai világban, amikor naponta fedeznek fel, találnak ki valami újdonságot, amikor a számítógépek minden létező kérdésre választ adnak, amikor nagyvállalatok és nemzetközi társaságok szorítják vissza a politikát, mindenekelőtt bátor és megbízható, kíváncsi és barátságos, figyelmes és gondolkodó emberekre van szükség. Olyanokra, akik átlátják a dolgokat és van öntudatuk (Hentig 2006, 77).
