I have a small desktop lamp beside my main PC.

The only thing I do after dark is checking my email - occasionally with lights on - in case my non-EU customers might have some work for me. My days of working late into the night are long gone, I prefer getting up very early in the morning, around 6 when the sun is getting up in Lisbon.

Lights on, but ... Sep 10, 2022

... yellow light of low intensity only, and with inverted colours on the screen to avoid my melatonine levels to drop. In any case, I try to avoid evening work, but this is how I do it when it's really necessary.

Is that a view from your balcony?

I don’t work very late into the night, it’s a circadian rhythm killer.

However, during the peak winter months days become very short, which means some working hours will fall into the dark/night. In which case the lights are definitely on, but they need to be my kind of yellow/warm lights.

No, I wish! It’s the view from the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology (MAAT in short) to the bridge over the Tagus River. An excellent place to go walking, stroll along the river, listen to the seagulls, watch the boats go by and the sunrise or the sunset.

I avoid contrast with the screen Sep 10, 2022

In the daytime I work with the light coming in from the window at the side, and I sit facing a wall which is light green and blank in front of me. There is a big picture calendar on one side. The light intensity is roughly the same as from the screen. When the sun shines in directly I draw thin curtains to avoid glare, and then later, I turn on indirect lighting. Then my eyes do not need to adjust if I look away from the screen to think! They do not try to adjust to any difference between the sc... See more

Then my eyes do not need to adjust if I look away from the screen to think! They do not try to adjust to any difference between the screen and the wall either, so I do not get tired.

The equinox is this month, and the days are getting shorter... so I need lighting from about 8 pm.
By December there are so few hours of daylight at these latitudes, and the weather is often grey too, so I may have the light on all day. I actually want to sing in February, when I can feel that the days are getting longer again!

As for people in the real north of Scandinavia - I don't know how they survive the winter! But at midsummer, when it barely gets dark before the dawn appears on the horizon, that glorious twilight pays for it all!

to protect my vision. The two lights (LED) on the ceiling beam down on the wall behind my monitor, usually when it gets dark. Otherwise, the other three LED lights over my head on the ceiling direct beams at me and my desk. In fact, my years of experiences taught me that a headache could result from watching a monitor screen whose background is darker.

lights off? Sep 12, 2022

I thought this question a little silly until I realized come winter in Europe, it's going to be lights out due to the shenanigans of a certain person in Muscovy. (with apologies to the moderators)

When the sun is not too bright outside, I open the blinds. Otherwise, blinds closed and lights on, all the time (day and night). When the sun wasn't too bright I sometimes forget to close the blinds after dark, and people in the street can see me working.

Getting old? Sep 12, 2022

I use my reading lamp, sometimes even during day time. If I were working from home today, I wouldn't have it on because the sun is doing its job just fine (some people still keep blowing the dust off the stale joke about a St. Petersburger, of which I am one, seeing the sun for the first time, but this is bullcrap) When I was a teen, I'd spend hours listening to the radio in complete darkness. I didn't want the lights to be on. So, maybe it's a sign of getting old, at least in my case: wanting to spend more time in illuminated spaces. On the other hand, I don't often use ceiling lights, they are too bright for me. I still like being in drafty rooms. And I don't mind unkempt environments. Doctor, am I normal?Collapse

On, to some degree Sep 15, 2022

I prefer not to work at night, but if I am, I have the lights on and a screen dimmer for my computer screen. Working with the lights off would feel strange, as though I were some kind of cave-dwelling goblin typing away on a keyboard.
