No, not so far. If I would aid or not depends on my availability and on the project in itself: sounds like it could be fun, but I'd like to know more…

Robot talk? Sep 21, 2022

What kind of implementation are we talking about here? For personal assistants like Siri? For ASR like Dragon? For making creepy YouTube videos (I feel fantastic, hey, hey, hey)?

Yes, but I have declined so far Sep 21, 2022

I have been approached in a couple of mass emails that did not seem too realiable to me, so I didn't even reply to them. That has been my experience so far, so I would be very interested to hear what other translators have to say about this job.

Perhaps, I'm not sure. I occasionally receive e-mails about an "exciting opportunity" to improve some technology and always react the same way – ignore and delete.

No, but might be up for it Sep 21, 2022

I have done a little voice-over work in the past, so I might be interested in something like this. Some of the howlers that crop up in robo-speak are hilarious. In fact, there was one just the other day in computer-generated subtitle voice-overs, but I don't recall exactly what it was, just that I almost fell off my chair laughing.

We now have a prime minister in the UK who is actually a robot. https://tinyurl.com/2gpq46r6

I suggested this poll because I have worked on 2 projects with 'robots' - or AI voice-over.
I accepted the jobs out of curiosity.

The first project was for a commercial video, where I had to insert codes for pauses and codes for stress patterns for robot speak, to make it sound natural. (One problem for AI is to stress the right syllables at word level, and the right words at sentence level).

The second project was for an e-learning course. I had to do script revi

The second project was for an e-learning course. I had to do script review, audio cues (timing) and QA testing.

Both were learning experiences but I prefer plain translation.

I am not sure if this is exactly what the asker intends to find out. But here it is: For the last couple of months, I have been assisting to hone a text-to-speech project. My task consists of listening to the audio and modify the text to achieve an acceptable level of comprehension for the target audience. When it is impossible to perfect the spelling of the words, I re-word the text avoiding the kind of words that are hard for the robot to pronounce.

I've wondered about that Sep 21, 2022

Now I understand the odd requests for native speakers of American English to provide examples of normal conversation.

From time to time I watch documentary videos on YouTube, some with closed captioning. On some videos, the voice over uses normal inflection, unlike the voice on a satnav, for example. But the game is given away when it comes to dates. The first time I encountered this, the "narrator" rendered the year 1952 as "one thousand nine hundred fifty-two" an error no native s

But the game is given away when it comes to dates. The first time I encountered this, the "narrator" rendered the year 1952 as "one thousand nine hundred fifty-two" an error no native speaker – or anyone familiar with English – would make. Likewise, typos in the closed captioned script are pronounced (typo couldnt't > pronounced couldn't-t). To be honest, it gives me the creeps.

Yes, I rejected Sep 21, 2022

Last week, I was invited for a very reliable and big company project, to help with machine translation. I declined out of principle, in my personal opinion, helping translation automation is digging your own grave.
This is an interesting pool with surprising results.

I did work on a project for automated prompts on a dating app, not altogether sure that counts? From what most have understood, I think so. In which case I would like to change my answer to "yes and I liked it" rather than "not sure" or whatever neutral thing I clicked on.
The idea was to have little prompts pop up on the screen to point out things your profile has in common with those you're viewing. Along the lines of "hey you both love dogs, why not suggest a meet-up at the dog park".<

It was good fun, I had to translate what was given to me, but I was allowed a lot of creative freedom and could add extra remarks in the event of inspiration, which I did sometimes when I couldn't choose between two possible translations.
I kept ending up on lists of pick-up lines on pick-up artist websites. I had no idea these even existed, and most of what I trawled through was either creepy or cringeworthy or both (along the lines of "you both love eating Italian, why not invite her for a pizza your heart")

Great question anyway Yetta, makes a change!

No, not robots. lol Sep 22, 2022

When you say "robot speak", I actually picture a voice-over. People were instead describing textual robot prompts here (I did these). Or perhaps you meant textual prompts on which voice-over is done later on?

When it comes to "speak", I did some voice-over characters a couple of times and it was fun, total opposite of anything robotic. These were creative projects.
