I recently raised my rate for revision/correction, by more or less the current rate of inflation. However, I didn't do it because of inflation, but because the clients are increasingly demanding admin tasks that I dislike and which take up time (preparing budget estimates, issuing certificates... etc).

I haven’t increased my rates to my long-standing customers (my rates are higher than average in Portugal). Anyway, nowadays to new clients I tend to quote each project individually. Just generally worrying about it without being able to do anything about it. I can't increase my rates because they're already too high for most people. I could just increase my workload but most of the jobs offered to me are not interesting enough for me to want to do them (I've reached a stage where I can pick and choose).
As for making economies : during previous lean periods in my life I learned how to live economically and it became a habit that has stayed with me. There's very little more I can economise on, now, that I'm not already economising on.
And yes, I know about not ending a statement with a preposition.

I have not been affected yet, in the sense that I would have to cut down on expenses not to get any issues with my bills to pay. But because of the environment and climate, I'm not an avid consumer anyway (second-hand clothing, vegan food, no air travel), with the additional benefit that it saves money. On the income side, I've increased rates for some of my existing clients and quote higher rates for new clients. The result so far is that I get less but better paying work. Exactly where I want ... I think one could be prepared for such situation by investing some of their earnings in the long term, not just trying to fix this fast by increasing rates when it starts getting hard.

I am trying - not always successfully - to go to bed and get up earlier, to avoid using electric lighting more than necessary. (It will not help much for the next three months - the days are short and the weather is grey, so I need the electric light all the time!) But it would be healthier, I think, and it will make a slight difference in the summer.
Otherwise turning off unnecessary lighting and taking advantage of varying electricity rates - I can bake bread and do the washing wh... My husband and I developed frugal habits long ago, when we had to buy a house and I was not earning much. We were brought up frugally ... He grows a lot of fruit and vegetables in the garden, which are not affected by inflation, and our pensions cover the basics, so financially we are not worried. Savings are as green as possible, for the sake of the climate, but we can then help others who are really feeling the pinch - as we did last time around, and as others helped us. ▲ Collapse

- I can hardly earn more than I already do without a great deal of effort and overhaul I don't want to make.
- There is very little slack in my way of living to "waste" less without impacting my household's well-being and those little pleasures of life. I don't have (yet?) to cut expenses and general non-vital spending, but I changed my electricity contract to an hourly discrimination tariff, hoping to bring back the monthly amount to pre-industrial levels.

- I am also seriously looking into covering the roof with PV panels to save on electricity bills (and perhaps lower my carbon footprint), but it needs additional thinking.
Fortunately, for the time being in this part of the world, I ONLY have to deal with inflation and other non-vital concerns. All family members are safe, well-fed, hydrated and in good health.

I already charge high rates to my clients. This should give me enough breathing room for a good while, fingers crossed. I don’t like buying and owning things. And when I do need to make a big purchase, I’d favor second-hand items anyway. If only flea market was a thing in my culture, it would definitely be my one-stop-shop where I get my goods from.

I don’t use air conditioning, I wash my clothes by hand, and I don’t travel much to justify getting myself a vehicle. I also live alone and don’t own a pet. There are many other things which I don’t think would be necessary to list here. The point is that all of these factors have allowed me to easily minimize my energy consumption and expenditure. I can even save up for a rainy day.
Having said that, when I finally get my long overdue vacation, I plan to learn how to solder/de-solder mobos. Knowing how to fix a (supposedly) dead machine would let me have a Core-i business laptop for $10 to $20. I can potentially reduce my spending even more should I need to buy a “new” laptop.
Things like this are what make me feel grateful that my parents raised me the rough way. Their parenting style may not be up to 2022 standard. But I still wouldn’t trade them for the world.

except for turning off unnecessary lights plus turning TV and other devices from stand by to off, when not used - and the router off during night time.
How much will that help? Honestly, I am not sure.
Otherwise, I am thinking of raising my rates at the turn of the year. (The last time was 3 years ago).

It is impossible to put up rates due to price pressure. I'm actually earning less since COVID (some customers have not returned), so I simply have to spend less.

Inflations come and go, life is a one time chance. It's too short to have it spoilt by money matters.

Seems we are a pretty frugal lot here! I certainly can't really fathom how to use less electricity since I'm very minimalist by nature.
I did put up my hourly rate recently but more because I want to be sure of being able to translate from scratch instead of proofreading when the text is dodgy, than because of inflation.
