Hello everybody,
I have been asked to give an estimate price for the translation of a documentary (in subtitles). It is 1:17 minutes long. How shall I calculate and what are the average rates in Spain?

Shall I calculate per word or per subtitling line?

Is your project 1min:17sec long in total?
If yes, I think you should charge them as for your minimum job.

Yes, the total lenght is 1:17 minutes. But I have no rates yet stablished, as this is my first sutitling job.
This is why I do not kwno if rates are per word or line.

Usually this kind of translation is paid per minute or per subtitle.
Is the documentary 1 minute and 17 seconds long? If so, maybe just charge your minimum rate for a regular translation. However, if it is 1 hour and 17 minutes long, then you might want to apply the per minute rate. Unfortunately, I cannot tell you how much it might be in Spain. Try to search the forum - you should find some answers.

Absolutely agree with Tatiana. In my previous posting I meant that the minimum cost may be applied if it is less then some minutes. In this case I meant 1 minute and 17 seconds. But of course if it is 1 hour and 17 minutes long, this job is much more then minimal, and a per minute rate (or total cost, according to your negotiation) should be applied.

I don't know how much would it be for 1:17, because it's too little. I can guide you about the rates in Spain for subtitling TV series and voice-over.
The subtitles for a TV series cost aprox. between 0,30€ and 0,60€/subtitle. The subtitles for a film (not TV films) cost aprox. 500€ (the whole film). And voice-over for a documentary normally cost 42€/10 minutes.

I understand 1:17 minutes as 1 minute and 17 seconds. One hour and 17 minutes for me would be 1:17 hours or 1:17:00. The safest notation is 1h17m or 1h17m00s.
Believe it or not, I've had such small requests, e.g. 2-4 min. So I decided to set a 10-min minimum per individual project. If it's the translation of several videos in one same job order, they count as one, as long as it's either a translation-only job, or if all of them will be assembled onto just one DVD, authoring charged separately.
This minimum takes care of file type conversion, disk for recording, audio track enhancement (sometimes it can barely be heard), and other "hassles" which may be needed or not - you never know before you've seen it.
Regarding rates, my Brazilian figures would be meaningless in Spain.

Feature film: 90-100 min.: 300 - 450€
10-minute roll (TV): 30€, 36.50€, 38€ // (Docs): 30-40€
For DVD: 0.41 to 0.46 per subtitle
Don't forget that 1 subtitle includes 1 or 2 lines. And you will have to respect Time codes as well.
This is what professionals usually charge in Spain for this kind of work.

The film lasts 82 minutes for one part (Japonese to French), and 40 minutes for the other part (Chnese-Cantonese to French).
Before invoicing the client, of course, I asked rates, and I agreed with the translators that a rate of 20 EUR per minute would be fair.

When I called the client (who produces the film) he said that the rates (which of course included my own spread) were quite low
But I consider that a rate of, say, 14-15 EUR / min for your pair would be acceptable (at least, if I had to outsource you the same kind of job in your pairs, I would say so!).

Double what you charge for subtitling alone (4.60-5.00 US$/min)?
Let's say 10 US$/min?
I will never et 14-15 EURO/min that's for sure.
I am not dealing with the producer but with a US subtitling agency.
