Hello everyone,
I am a professional translator with a Master's Degree and I would like to subtitle some English TV shows for my parents who don't speak English well enough.
I have no experiencee in subtitling and I was wondering if anyone could help me out with the following:
1. Is there a user-friendly, free subtitling program that I can download?
2. Any tips or hints on subtitling?

you have to choices to start the subtitling
1. transcribe the video and time code the transcribed text but you have to make sure that it's short sentences try not to exceed 40 Characters per line after that you will have the transcribed text time coded, you have to watch or listen to the video through the Subtitle workshop to make sure that the lines are synchronized with video or audio, then you will find an option under Edit menu named Translation once you click over it you will find "Translator Mode" just click it or use Ctrl + U (shortcut) , it will split the window into 2 screens the Original transcribed one and the one you will add your translation in, but you should make sure that you are using Ctrl + Shift + S to save the translation window for the first time you will be asked to name the translated file , once you started to translate don't forget to use Ctrl + Shift + S every 2 or 3 lines to make sure that you data is saved well .
2.You could start your translation directly through creating a new Subtitling file by opening the video or audio file and using Ctrl+N to create and name a new file (recommended to use Subrip file type which is common file type with extension *.srt ), by using this way you have to options .
First : is to translate depending on using Alt + C to start a Start Point and closing the line by using Alt +v ( this way takes longer time )
Second: you could translate using a random time coded lines and after finishing all the file you can just listen and Synchronize the text with the time code by shortening the sentences to meet the count of characters standards and the synchronization time by using Alt +C and Alt +V.

I agree with Sameh. Subtitle Workshop is a good free software for producing subtitling files (the most common is SRT) and I've been using it too.
However, in the past few years I have discovered several websites that enable you creating SRT files. In most of them you can only caption online videos (like Youtube), but one of them DotSub also lets you upload a video file from your computer.

Once I tried to install it, and AVG antivirus (fully licensed) went berserk about it. This may have been a false positive, but I wouldn't know. Caution is advisable.

I just installed Subtitle Workshop in order to subtitle some canine training videos which are wmv format. It is not a job, just to practice and portfolio.
Thing is, after I opened the software I loaded the video and it was show like in an upside down mirror in the software, then whenever I clicked pause in order to start a subtitle the video got stuck and won't run again.
