Maybe some of us could translate the main HRW report http://www.hrw.org/english/docs/2007/04/16/uzbeki15703.htm into the other HRW site languages (German, Spanish, Arabic, Japanese, Chinese, and around 20 other languages listed on the ... See more The Human Rights Watch website has information about Umida Niazova only in English and French. Maybe some of us could translate the main HRW report http://www.hrw.org/english/docs/2007/04/16/uzbeki15703.htm into the other HRW site languages (German, Spanish, Arabic, Japanese, Chinese, and around 20 other languages listed on the HRW site) and offer these translations to HRW for inclusion in their website, free of charge?
The text is less than 1000 words - a couple of hours' work for the best of causes!

I would just like to thank you all for your support! I wish Umida knew how many of her colleagues all over the world are thinking of her and willing to help her, I'm sure it would give her strength...

Let's say it's fine by me, Proz has its reasons and I respect them.
But, can we ask for help to any Professional Association? I guess a letter form A.T.A. or from F.I.T. (Fédération Internationale des Traducteurs) could help a lot.
Is there any prozian, member of any of these organizations, willing to send a letter or to ask for information?
I believe this is not a political problem anymore. They could give Umida a hand.
Any other idea?

Once again, thanks for your rightful thinking and illuminating opinions.
It's no easy task to "stay afloat" when it comes up to such violent issues. With "staying afloat" I mean, "to keep this place tranquil" - but at the same time, ensure that we are not threatened, jailed, etc. etc. etc.
And people like you are like lighthouses in this huge ocean.

I've received a read receipt on my appeal from MFA Uzbekistan
In addition, in reply to my several e-mails to different authorities and officials I've received one positive response - one of the Estonian MEPs said she will do whatever she can to impact the situation. I've expressed my opinion that EU should officially depreciate such actions by Uzbekistan, especially in light of the decisions to be made on May 14 regarding elimination of sanctions. Today I received 2 more replies from EU institutions - one from the Translation DG that they've forwarded my e-mail to external relations and the second from external relations:
the European Commission and the EU as such are following the case of Ms Niazova very closely and we are raising it with the Uzbek authorities. We share your concern and the matter will be raised again in upcoming contacts with the Uzbeks.

I am truly glad that the initial news about EU's removal of the sanctions has proven wrong and that they are geniunely concerned about this matter.
However, I am still very concerned what will happen to Umida. There is no news about her on UZnews after the adjournement of the trial, but there is an article from yesterday about another human rights activist, who has just been jailed for 6 years:
Turayeva’s ruling coincided with the statement on Central Asia adopted by EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg on 23 April, calling on the Uzbek authorities to start a result-oriented human rights dialogue with the EU as soon as possible.
The quick sentencing of Gulbahor Turayeva after the EU foreign ministers’ meeting is another example of how the Uzbek authorities understand a result-oriented human rights dialogue.

So we should still continue informing as many people as possible, urging them to send letters to the Uzbek authorities. I have no idea, whether it helps, but I can't think of anything else we could do... Any suggestions?

(TASHKENT) - An Uzbekistan court Tuesday sentenced a rights activist and translator for New York-based Human Rights Watch to seven years in jail for distributing inflammatory publications, an HRW official said.
The Sergeli district court in Tashkent found Umida Niyazova, a 32-year-old Uzbek citizen, guilty of illegally crossing the border, smuggling and distributing publications threatening public order, the HRW representative, Andrea Berg, told AFP."
I still haven't heard anything from Amnesty International yet, except that they were aware of her case and that she has already been adopted by Amnesty as a prisoner of conscience. I will contact them again and ask if they are planning any further action for Umida and other human rights activists jailed in Uzbekistan.
