Depends Oct 20, 2022

It does depend on the system, though.

Often platforms are a waste of my time Oct 20, 2022

Platforms are more often than not a waste of my time, because agencies tend to use them to force free-lancers to do some of their internal admin duties and save on their expenses

It doesn't really matter. Oct 20, 2022

The main advantages of a platform are a 10-minute time gain if you have to deliver files that are way too heavy to be sent through e-mail and the immediate delivery confirmation. But none of both are critical.

Email Oct 20, 2022

I prefer working via email and using my own CAT tools.

However, some TMS are quite good and with the regular clients you get to learn how they work.

But with sporadic clients it can be a bother to remember all their different systems, passwords etc.

Email Oct 20, 2022

When out and about, I find it irritating having to log into a system in several steps to see a file they could have just emailed (or that is no longer available).

Email Oct 20, 2022

I’m looking to make my life easier not the other way around…

P.S. The most irritating thing is when I am asked to use for my password at least one upper case letter, one lowercase letter, one number, one symbol and no more than x-y characters…

I use LastPass (there are other password managers too) and this is no longer an issue for me! You can generate passwords according to the requirements for any site or system and just save them in your vault. That way you also never have to use the same password on multiple sites.

Well-functioning platforms Oct 20, 2022

As long as the clients' platforms function more or less well (such as XTRF or Plunet), I actually prefer those, especially when it comes to large files (over 20 MB) that I would otherwise have to upload elsewhere, e.g. WeTransfer, then send my customer the download link.
Other platforms (mostly in-house developments rather than readily available 3rd-party solutions) are so slow, bulky and underdeveloped that email is definitely the better solution.

Please stop using LastPass. It gets hacked all the time.

Now, to answer the poll question so I wouldn't incite the wrath of the mods, my answer would be a hybrid system. I don't mind working on the outsourcers' platforms, but I do need to archive the project details in my emails, just in case if there was a payment issue.

Something like the above has become my password for several of those, but if I get to that point, then as soon as I have been paid, I refuse to work with them ever again!

The website I have to go on to pay my dues to the government systematically tells me that my password (duly noted on an unassuming scrap of paper in a safe place) is not correct. So I pretend to have forgotten it and when I try to enter the same password as before, it tells me it's already in use. So now I use the previous password, and add "odd" or"even" to them according to the number of the month I'm declaring revenue for, so I alternate passwords as it were.
